Devin - Project Interfaith Video #5

Reflection questions this week:

Briefly tell us about your service this week. (Where did you go? What did you do?)

Why do you believe people suffer? What or who causes it?

Based on your beliefs, what are ways people can alleviate suffering?

What is one thing that a fellow participant said in their latest post that struck you? What was your reaction to this? What about his/her post did you connect with or made you react?

Comments:

In many parts of the world suffering is viewed as a way to strengthen a person and develop character in them. But in America, my experiece has been that we see suffering as bad and do everything we can to alleviate suffering. Some the best life lessons I've had have come through suffering.

A friend of mine, Dr. Joel Gajardo, is a retired professor from Peru. He taught religion at NYU for a number of years, and he speaks about suffering in Peru and how it is viewed differently by Peruvians than suffering is viewed by Americans. I see the same thing. Suffering in Iran is viewed differently by myself and my family in Iran than by my friends and family who live in America.

While I don't usually talk about this, I suffered a great deal when I moved to England and then later to the United States. While it was hard, I consider all of it Character Development Moments!

Keep up the good work Devin.
Helen
